The Great Raid of '06 In the spring of '06, Mister Mac organized a raid on the H.M.S. Surprise to capture her and all the treasure aboard. Along with Captain Swordfish, Anne Bonny, Black Cat, and Angry Bob,several hundred other scurvy dogs and scallywags showed up for the boarding party. The commander of the Surprise, Captain Artemus Prior, was aware of the pirates plan and had added extra men to his ship for defense .
It was also known to the pirates that there were several gentlemen and ladies travelling aboard along with the captain's wife, Lady Elizabeth.
While some of the pirates attacked from the sea, Mister Mac led the main body of the boarding party down the docks.
Demands were given to the Brits that they surrender their ship and they would be allowed to leave unharmed.
Despite the fact that he and his crew were outnumbered 20 to 1, Captain Prior refused to surrender. Mister Mac gave the word and the raid was on.
"Swords and flintlocks at the ready. Now follow me, lads, the ship and all her treasure is ours for the taking."
The pirates stormed the ship in overwhelming numbers and the British sailors put up a worthy fight. But they were no match for the skilled swords of Mister Mac, Black Cat, and the other buccaneers.
"The ship is ours, lads! Hip, hip, hooray!"
With swords still at the ready, Mister Mac issued demands to Captain Prior and his crew...surrender or die! Their choice was clear. After the Brits surrendered, Mister Mac informed the captain that he and his men were free to go...but the treasure and the ladies were to remain on board.
Now don't get the wrong idea. Though he was a pirate, surely, Mister Mac is an honorable man and would never harm a lady or hold her against her will.
Lady Elizabeth was given a choice. She and her entourage could stay aboard with the pirates and sail the seas living a life of adventure and glory...or she could leave with Captain Prior and his men.
It would seem her choice was clear.
Facing impossible odds the captain and his men disembarked, vowing to come back with reinforcements. But that would be a fight for another day. As the Westlin' Weavers played and the crew celebrated Mister Mac and Lady Elizabeth shared a dance on the quarterdeck.
And they all lived happily ever after.
